So for me this year, the big 30 is approaching. It’s a pretty big milestone. I remember joking at my 21st – the next one will be 30, and I’m almost there. A LOT has happened in the past 9 years, I’ve grown so much and I’m no where near the person I was all those years ago.
Now is the time to be a ‘proper adult’, no more weird combination dinners or phoning your parents for help. Here’s my list of things you should do/have before you turn 30…
Have a signature dish
If you’ve not mastered the art of cooking yet, don’t be so hard on yourself – but make sure you have at least 1 dish down. Something yummy that you can make if someone is coming over, or you need to take a dish to a party. Make sure you perfect that one dish.
Own quality key pieces of clothing
I’m all for affordable fashion, but as a proper adult you should have some key quality pieces in your wardrobe such as – a winter coat, a fitted shirt, a little black dress, tailored trousers, and a good pair of running shoes.
Make peace with the past
We’ve all done silly things, we’ve all been wronged or hurt in some way. But don’t let the past hold you back. Remember that was you back then, and right now you’re here…reading this post and everything is a distant memory. You’re past don’t define you, it’s who you are today.
If you don’t exercise already, you should start thinking about it. We all know it’s good for you. Even if you’re just having a 30 min walk each day – get moving. You’ll thank yourself later.
If you don’t have a fund for a rainy day, now is the time to start saving. Try and put a little aside each month. When the time comes that you need it, you’ll thank yourself later as well.
Think of others
You don’t need to quit your job and move to Guatemala to help others. As they say – charity starts at home. Have some clothes you’re chucking out? Why not donate them to your local charity shop. Have an elderly neighbour, maybe see if they need anything from the supermarket. There is a lot of ways to be charitable without spending money.
Quit those bad habits
Bite your nails, smoke, or use frebreeze instead of doing laundry? Quite those bad habits, there’s not better time than turning 30 to turn over a new leaf.
Have a list of emergency contacts
At 30 there’s no need to call Mum or Dad to fix things. Open the yellow pages and find someone who can help. Also I’d suggest keeping the number of the local vet, plumber, electrician and handyman in your phone.
Looks after yourself
The older we get the more things we seem to get wrong with us. There’s no better time than now to keep on top of your health. Delayed your trip to the dentist – book it now. Been needing a smear test – get it booked. You’re an adult now, no one will book your appointments for you, it’s all up to you now.
Experience different cultures
Over the years I’ve met a load of people from a whole load of different countries and all different walks of life. Not only do I find it interesting finding out about other cultures, I find it opens your eyes and you see things from a fresh perspective about your own culture. So next time you have a chance, ask someone from a different country or culture about their traditions/food/thoughts…and share something about your traditions/food and thoughts as well.
Are you turning 30? What else would you recommend?
