I recently saw a few other bloggers on twitter being insulted by companies asking them for a blog post as part of a competition. A few months ago I wrote a post about ‘When to say NO to a brand’ , and I still believe in saying no when it doesn’t fit your niche, or you don’t get anything in return.
However I do see companies asking bloggers to write a post and they’ll be entered into a prize draw. Now if you’re a full time blogger and getting sponsored posts, I can see why you wouldn’t want do that. However for smaller bloggers I think it’s a great opportunity, and there’s a few reasons why.
First, it’s a great way to build a relationship with a brand, secondly it will give you something to write about and lastly, you might even win…and if you think no one ever wins, I’ve won two of them!
Also I understand it from the brands point of view, as I work in marketing monday to friday, I understand how cost effective promotions like this can be.
There is one thing to note though, only enter these competitions with brands/sites that you’re already promoting/using/like. There is no point in promoting a brand or site you don’t like or would use you’re self for the sake of winning something you wouldn’t want anyway.
So next time you get an email about a blogger prize draw, don’t be so quick to judge. It might no be for you, but it’s great for other people.
