While this blog is still relatively new, I have been blogging for the past 4 years and I thought I would pass on some of my wisdom.
So you want to start a blog? In my opinion the first thing you need to decide what platform you want to use –
This is probably the easiest of the two platforms that I’ll suggest. You can sign up with a gmail address and it’s perfect for first timers. You don’t need to know anything about code of hosting. You just chose your blog name and you’ll have a blog address something like: myblog.blogspot.com and you are ready to go. Customising the colours and layout is really simple.
It works pretty similar to Blogger, but in my opinion is a little more advanced. You’ll still have a name such as myblog.wordpress.com . But you’ll have more ability to customise your blog and install plug in.
If you are a technophobe but still want a blog, i’d suggest going with blogger. It’s easy to set up and moving to your own custom domain is a lot easier.
Domains is a website address: www.someofmyfavouritethings.com is a domain. I recommend buying one from Godaddy. It’s a pretty easy to use service.
Now if you’d like to have a domain name for your own blog, there is two options (well 3) –
- Start with blogger and then add a custom domain(this is the easiest option)
- Add a domain to your myblog.wordpress.com but this cost $18 per year, and if you are going to down this route its better to have a self hosted WP blog as IMO you’ll have more control
- Have a self hosted wordpress (this is a little more difficult to set up- more info coming soon)
So in summary if you want to set up your own blog, think if you’d like your own domain first, then pick the platform for your needs. If you’re completely new to all of this, I would suggest going with blogger then adding your own domain name. Domains can we as cheap as a few dollars depending on what you’d like to call your blog.
I’d suggest checking out GoDaddy first and look for some blog names/domains. This will save you from having to change your blog name afterwards.
